Having written to the Minister on the need to retain steel safeguards, I have today received a positive response from the Minister. You may have seen that I wrote about the extra costs facing the UK steel industry in the Times, and I continue to make the case for government support as co-Chair of the Steel Parliamentary group. You can read the Minister's response to my calls below.
As you will be able to see, the Trade Remedies Authority is holding an ongoing review into transitional steel safeguards. This is expected to be concluded by the end of June, and I will be encouraging all local stakeholders to contribute to the consultation before then. You can read about the consultation here. The Minister will then be obliged to carry the recommendations of the Trade Remedies Authority unless there is a threat to public interest. I will follow the review with great interest.
