Today, I contacted Business Secretary Alok Sharma to ask for flexibility to the Job Retention Scheme. My letter and the Business Sec's response is below.
I asked if there could be more flexibility on the three-week minimum furlough to be eligible for the CJRS. Essential workers could fall sick in any industry, therefore the ability to call on furloughed workers to fill these crucial gaps would provide more certainty for employers. After showing the Business Secretary around our steelworks in February, I highlighted that core blast furnace workers may be needed if those in place have symptoms and need to self-isolate. This strikes our key industries, so a government response is necessary. I also passed on the thanks that many businesses in Scunthorpe have given in response to the government's CJRS.
