Residents will know that I do not hesitate to call out challenges affecting Steel. However, it is equally important to recognise all the really positive work that the government is doing to support our industry.
You may recall the successful campaign I ran with colleagues on extending UK Steel Safeguards earlier this year. The Prime Minister personally intervened to protect our steel industry, preventing the risk of mass "dumping" of cheap steel into the UK had the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA)'s recommendation’s been followed.
I’m delighted that the government have now put in place plans for further laws which are good news for Steel. The new rules would ensure that the Trade Secretary's hands will not be tied by decisions made by TRA in the upcoming Steel Safeguards review. The Trade Secretary would be able to take into account how future recommendations could impact our steel industry.
This is certainly good news for our steelworks and I'm pleased that the Trade Secretary and the government have shown such leadership and planning on this issue. I look forward to working with her and her team to represent our local area and what’s important to us.
